History of South Carolina
South Carolina was first explored by the Spaniard Francisco Cordilla in 1521. Charles Towne, the first permanent English settlement, was established at Albemarle Point on the Ashley River in 1670. A decade later, the village moved to the present site of Charleston. The Carolina Colony divided into its current northern and southern portions in 1729. South Carolina became the eighth state in 1788. In 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union. The Civil War began soon after, when the Confederate troops bombarded Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Most of the state, including the state capital of Columbia, was set ablaze by General William Tecumseh Sherman in 1865. The Spoleto Festival USA, a celebration of culture and the arts was held in Charleston for the first time in 1977.
About South Carolina
South Carolina is classified as two geographical regions: the upcountry and low country. The upcountry consists of rolling Blue Ridge Mountains with forests, waterfalls and scenic beauty. Greenville and Spartanburg consist of this region. Additional attractions include the town of Pendleton which is listed on the national register of historical places. Pendleton is home to the historic Ashtabula Plantation that was created in the 1820s. The low country is credited with many distinguishing features and locations. The Grand Stand (Myrtle Beach) includes 60 miles of coast, over 120 golf courses, and an abundance of shopping. Charleston, arguably the most unique southern city, is full of heritage and history. Historical Charleston is the oldest and second largest city in the state. It hosts the Spoleto Festival in the spring, and is the home to Drayton Hall Plantation, the City Market, and countless other sites. Hilton Head Island is known for its gold, seafood, beaches, and beauty. Family attractions include: the Children’s Museum of SC, Drayton Hall (oldest preserved plantation house in US), Ripley’s and SC Aquariums, SC State Museum, and several State parks.

History of North Carolina
In 1585, under the sponsorship of Queen Elizabeth I, Sir Walter Raleigh established a colony on Roanoke Island. Five years later, when Governor John White returned from England for supplies, he found no trace of the original settlement. It was not until the 1650s that Virginia colonists made the first permanent settlement on Albemarle Sound. In 1789, North Carolina became the twelfth state. Fourteen years prior in 1775, Mecklenburg County citizens met in Charlotte to draw up a declaration of independence from England. Over its course of history, North Carolina has become the home to Pepsi Cola and the Research Triangle Park.
Nature and Attractions
Culture, history and nature preside throughout North Carolina. Natural beauty abounds the state year round with blossoms of white dogwoods in the spring, colorful mountains in the fall, and scenic beaches in the summer, and snow covered peaks during the winter. The scenic Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains of the west and sandy beaches and Outer Banks of the east make it an ideally pleasurable place to both live and visit.
Some key attractions to the states include: North Carolina’s diverse terrain offers something for everyone. Skiing, hiking, biking, fishing, and camping are prevalent throughout the mountains. North Carolina’s coast is known by many to be the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Famous shipwrecks, such as Queen Anne’s Revenge, rest along the bottom of the ocean. It is believed that over 5,000 shipwrecks lie off the North Carolina coast. Many of the wrecks are attributed to weather and historical battles. In addition to the scenic beauty, history and culture, North Carolina is host to numerous golf courses and professional sports.

North Carolina’s population rests at over eight million people. It is the 28th largest in square mile size. The capital is Raleigh, and the highest point is 6,684 feet at Mount Mitchell. The Raleigh-Durham area ranks as one of the best places to live in the U.S.
