A new set of guidelines calls for all women to be screened for osteoporosis starting at age 65 and those with high risks could start earlier, at any age. The new guidelines are by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), which is sponsored by the U.S. government's Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The original guidelines, which were established in 2002, had high risk women not starting until age 60. Women need to be screened much earlier than menopause since a woman starts losing bone at a maximal rate within two years of menopause. According to the National Institutes of Health, about 10 million people in the U.S. over the age of 50 have osteoporosis. Osteoporosis usually beings after menopause and increases the risk of broken bones.
